The force applied by
circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels is known as blood pressure. The
most common blood pressure values for a healthy adult human are approximately
120 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic. However, normal blood pressure varies
from person to person. In some people, the blood pressure levels fluctuate
widely, either rising or falling to abnormal levels. As this may lead to other
health problems such as heart disease, it is important to always keep blood
pressure under control.
Some common steps to
reduce high blood pressure are -
- Stop smoking
- Keep your
body weight at a healthy level.
- Follow a
healthy diet, stressing on fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy foods
- Get involved
in some physical activity.
- Consume
alcoholic drinks in moderation.
Some common tips to prevent low blood
pressure are -
- Dehydration
minimizes blood volume, which causes a drop in pressure. Hence, drink
plenty of water.
- Go for a
walk after meals. This helps in bringing the blood pressure level up to
normal.
- After
exercising, take some time out to cool down. A sudden stoppage in the
middle of an exercise routine can lead to a fall in blood pressure.
- Salt is
good for people with low blood pressure. Increase in salt consumption may
vary from person to person.
- Drinking
alcoholic beverages is harmful to people with a low blood pressure
condition. Such individuals should drink healthy juices or non-alcoholic
drinks only.
Before undertaking any of the above steps, remember to first consult
your doctor.
