Lymphatic Filariasis,
also known as Elephantiasis, threatens more than a billion people in more than 80 countries around the
world. More than 120 million people have already been affected and over 40
million individuals are critically injured and disfigured by the disease.
Around one-third of the persons infected with this disease live in
India
. The main
reason for the spread of Lymphatic Filariasis is the rapid and unplanned growth
of cities, which creates abundant breeding sites for mosquitoes that pass on
the disease. The main symptom of this disease is the enlargement of the entire
leg or arm, breasts or genitals.
Filariasis Prevention:
This
disease can be prevented by giving medicine
that destroys the microscopic worms to large communities of people as well as
by controlling the breeding of mosquitoes.
Avoiding mosquito bites is another type of
prevention. The mosquitoes that bear the microscopic worms typically bite
people during the night. If living in an area where Lymphatic Filariasis is
prevalent, one should:
- Apply insect
repellent to uncovered skin.
- Sleep under
a mosquito net.
- If
possible, stay indoors between dusk and dawn.
- Take an
annual dose of medicine that kills the worms circulating in the blood.
- When
outdoors, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect against
mosquito bites.
