Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

STDs or STIs (sexually transmitted infections) are infections/diseases that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. In India, the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases is quite high. Among the sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS is a serious concern.

A National STD Control Programme has been in operation since the mid-1950s. The program is clinic based, however, and covers only 5 per cent of all STD patients in the country. A majority of patients use private health care providers, the informal sector or resort to self medication for treatment. In acknowledgement of the need to strengthen the STD control program, especially in the context of the recently launched AIDS control program, efforts are being made to extend the existing program at the community level through existing private health care services in the country.
