Spinal cord injury occurs when there is
damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of sensation and/or mobility.
The precise effects of a spinal cord injury differ according to the type and
level of injury, and can be differentiated into two types: a) complete injury;
and b) incomplete injury.
The two common causes of spinal cord injury are:
- Trauma: automobile accidents, falls, gunshots and the like.
- Disease: Polio, Spina Bifida, Tumours, Friedreich's Ataxia and similar diseases.
Spinal Injury Prevention: Follow the following steps to prevent spinal injury:
- Use safe practices at work and at play
- Follow correct safety procedures and use protective equipment in the workplace.
- Exercise regularly, maintain good posture and lift heavy objects in the right way
- In recreation, warm up thoroughly and use appropriate techniques and equipment when playing sports.
- Drive safely in your vehicle. Follow the
rules of the road and always wear a seatbelt. Never take drugs or drink while
driving and don't travel in a vehicle being driven by a person who is under the
influence of drugs or alcohol.
