Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease, which takes the lives of about 1.6 million people each year. The magnitude of the disease is so severe that two people die of TB every three minutes in India. However, modern anti-TB treatment can cure virtually all patients. But, for the success of the treatment it is very important that the treatment be taken for the prescribed duration. This duration is fixed on a case-to-case basis from three to six months. 

Prevention of TB:

The following steps can prevent Tuberculosis:
  • Hands should be washed frequently, especially after being around people with chronic coughs.
  • Annual TB test should be undertaken. These are available for minimal cost at community clinics.
  • Chest X-ray cab be undertaken to detect clinical signs of TB in lungs.
  • Standing close to people when they are coughing should be avoided as far as possible.
  • A lot of fresh air should be inhaled to keep lungs healthy.
  • A Healthy diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, calcium, protein and fiber should be taken.
