The month of July is here, and with it comes the announcement of the Union Budget and the deadline for filing income tax returns. As always, we bring you helpful resources and online services to guide you about these key financial matters and much more.

Spotlight

Union Budget Online: After the presentation of the Interim Budget in February, the newly elected government is all set to roll out the Union Budget for this year. Also known as the Annual Financial Statement, the Budget is an estimate of the inflows and outflows of the government for a particular financial year. The National Portal of India brings you exclusive webcasts of the Budget Speech as well as transcripts of the Economic Survey and Railway Budget, to be announced at around the same time.

Guide To Filing Tax Returns: The deadline to filing income tax returns is drawing nearer. As the 31st of July arrives, we bring you a useful guide on filing income tax returns, designed to make this formidable task seem quite simple. This guide informs you about the four methods you can choose to file tax returns as well as provides a 10 step process to help you complete and submit this vital tax document. We also inform you about the importance of the 'Annual Tax Statement', a document sent to you by the Income Tax Department in the beginning of July, every year.

Accessibility

The Hindi Version of the National Portal of India, bharat.gov.in. has recently introduced accessibility features to enable visitors with disabilities or people using different devices and technology to access it comfortably. Persons may now choose to change the size and colour of text for better readability in screen readers, magnifiers and mobile phones. Certain features like descriptive text for links and images, expandable and collapsible lists, quick access to the navigation panel and the ability to surf using just the keyboard have also been added to enhance the browsing experience of people with disabilities.

Know India

This section offers us a glimpse into the spirituality, cultural variety, history, national symbols and demographics of India. The States and Union Territories segment of this section has been freshly updated with new content and figures based on India Book, 2009. It introduces you to the diverse States and Union Territories of the country and presents detailed information about their performance in various sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, power, industry, minerals, information technology, transport, festivals and tourism. Surf through this section to view the different facets of our glorious motherland.

Business
 

Government Tenders: The Business Portal has brought about a section on 'Government Tenders' to promote business with private entrepreneurs. It provides a list of procurement notifications as well as list of open or limited tenders floated by various ministries and departments both at the Central as well as the State level. Some of the areas where the government is looking to outsource certain tasks are civil works, information technology, electronics, housekeeping, networking and communications. Private vendors and contractors who fit the defined criteria may begin submitting their bids, and after proper verifications, may begin to do business with the government.

Citizens
 

Influenza A - H1N1: The Influenza A - H1N1 Virus, previously known as Swine Flu, is reported to be causing illness and death globally. This article seeks to demystify the hype surrounding this illness and provide you with accurate information. We bring you details about the symptoms of H1N1 Influenza as well as provide a list of prevention strategies to protect against this infection. These States are Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur and the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Lakshadweep.
