How is avian influenza detected in humans?
Avian influenza
needs to be diagnosed through a laboratory test. Usually a swab from the
nose or throat is gathered during the first few days of illness. This
swab is then sent to a laboratory, where the sample is put through a
molecular test and other procedures.
What are the repercussions of avian influenza on human health?
Two of the major risks to humans from
avian influenza are:
- The danger of contracting a direct infection if the virus
passes from the infected bird to humans.
- The danger that the virus may mutate into a form that is
extremely contagious for humans.
How is avian influenza in
humans treated?
Studies conducted in laboratories have
suggested that the prescription medicines approved for human influenza
viruses should also work as a remedy for avian influenza in humans.
However, if the influenza viruses become resistant to these drugs then
these medicines may not work. Further research needs to be done to find
out the effectiveness of these medicines.
Do eating or
preparing poultry or eggs cause avian influenza?
Avian influenza cannot be transmitted from
poultry and eggs that are safely handled and properly cooked. Even if
poultry and eggs were infected with the virus, proper cooking at a high
temperature should kill it. |
