The month of April is the harbinger of summer. It is a month of warmth and brightness, of sunshine and festivals. This month also marks the beginning of a new financial year after a period of calculation and planning for the future.

We believe that as responsible citizens of this country we should play our parts in conserving nature. Our spotlight on 'Green India' focuses on the government of India's initiatives to help protect and preserve the environment. As part of our on-going effort to provide you with latest information, the 'Agriculture' section under sectors on India.gov.in has been updated based on the India Book 2010. Read on to find out what all has been happening in the National Portal of India.

Empowerment for the Differently Abled: As a nation that believes in providing equal opportunity for everyone, the Indian government takes vast measures to provide various schemes and prospects to all its citizens. As per the 11th Plan, persons with disabilities could account for around 5 - 6% of the Indian population...

Green India - Working towards a better tomorrow: The Government of India has been a keen observer of the effects on the environment and has been in the forefront to help protect it. The Ministry of Environment & Forests has been actively involved in monitoring and formulating ways to preserve India's natural beauty and maintain a healthy ecological balance...

This section highlights the changes or updates carried out during this month in the National portal of India.

The content in the Agriculture section under Sectors has been updated based on India Book 2010.

Agriculture: One of the oldest occupations in the world, agriculture provides the principal means of livelihood for over 58.4% of India's population. In this section important information and links have been given regarding the policies and plans made by the Government. The section also contains numerous other things which may be of great help to not only the farmer community, but a lot of other people who are dependent on agriculture in one way or the other.

The other sections under Sectors are in the process of being updated to reflect latest and relevant information.

Commonwealth Games: The XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 are going to be held in Delhi and the preparations are happening in full swing. We have included a link to the official Commonwealth website on our 'In-focus' section.

Publications: The Publications Division publishes a host of books every month. Its main aim is to get books covering a large variety available to everyone at an affordable price. This month's publication includes:

The Gazetteer of India - History and Culture - Volume Two: This volume deals with the history and culture of India. The approach to the subjects treated in the volume is essentially Indian and the emphasis has been on the social, cultural, economic and artistic life of the people. Eminent scholars in different fields are contributors to this volume. Dr. P.N. Chopra has edited this book.

Jawaharlal Nehru: Sachitra Jeevachritram: Written by B.R. Nanda, a renowned historian, this is an account in pictures and words on Jawaharlal Nehru's multidimensional personality. The book traces his childhood, early identification with the aspirations of the people under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, his crusade for India's independence, and his efforts to build a modern India as its first Prime Minister.

It marks the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth after his death by crucification and is also the end of the 40-day period of fasting called Lent. This occasion is celebrated with special prayers at churches, feasts and the purchase of new clothes.

Baisakhi: This traditional harvest festival is celebrated under various names around the country. In some parts it marks the start of the solar New Year. For the Sikhs, it is the day when the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa Panth.
