Senior Citizens Act, 2007: In recent years, the migration of the youth to urban areas and foreign lands for education and jobs has seen the disintegration of the joint family. Many parents live alone with limited or no means to support themselves. This month, we focus on the Senior Citizens' Act, 2007, which aims to give parents a sense of financial security. We look at the main provisions of the Act, the process through which maintenance may be claimed as well as the punishments for erring relatives who are found guilty of not providing for their parents.
Current State of the Indian Economy: This part of the 'Indian Economy' module of our 'Business Section' has been updated with provisional figures up till July 2008. Latest data is available on the rate of industrial growth, amount of rainfall, food grain procurement, stock market trends, growth of industries, inflation, monetary indicators and a lot more. Read through this section for an insight into the economic workings of the country.

Consumer Rights: Businesses create products and services for profits targeting consumers. This newly introduced section on 'Consumer Rights' advises citizens of the options available if they find that a purchase is much less than what was promised in terms of quality or quantity. Here you will find details about various bodies to which an appeal can be made such as Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions, Consumer Protection Councils and Consumer Courts. This new section in the business module also provides information about filing a complaint, intellectual property rights and points to keep in mind before buying a product. Moreover, there is a list of the Acts, Rules, Regulations, Standards, Weights and Measures brought out by the government for the protection of consumers that one will find quite helpful.

Guru Nanak Jayanti

The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh religion, this festival is celebrated with great fervour in North India. It is a three day celebration that begins with a two day non stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. On the second day, the Guru Granth Sahib is taken out in a colourful procession with brass bands and 'Gatka' teams displaying their sword fighting skills. Sikhs visit the Gurudwara on the third day where hymns are sung and a special community lunch or 'Langar' is organized.

Wish your family and friends on this festival with some of the beautiful e-greeting cards available at
india.gov.in.
