Spotlight
Unique Identification Project was initially conceived by the Planning Commission as an initiative that would provide identification for each resident across the country, and would be used primarily as the basis for efficient delivery of welfare services. It would also act as a tool for effective monitoring of various programs and schemes of the Government.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI's) mandate is to issue every resident a unique identification number linked to the resident's demographic and biometric information, which they can use to identify themselves anywhere in India, and to access a host of benefits and services.

eWorld Forum Award for NPI: The prized web entity of every Indian, http://india.gov.in, was recently decorated with the top public choice award for the Best eGovernance Portal by the eWorld Forum at a glittering function in New Delhi.
Voted as the Best eGov Portal by the public in an open online poll, the National Portal of India scored high owing to its unique position as the lone Single-Window Access point to over 7000 portals and websites associated with the Government of India.
Independence Day 2011 Awardees: The 'My India, My Pride' page on the National Portal of India now comes updated with the latest list of Indians honoured for their exemplary service to the nation. The illustrious roll includes Correctional Services Medal, President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Police Medals for Gallantry and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Ganesh Chaturthi: A major festival in Maharashtra and Goa, this 10-day festival celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh, the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Ganesh idols are installed in homes and at public places, and are worshipped daily. On the 10th day, serpentine processions carrying idols of Ganesh fill the streets, accompanied by drumbeats and music. These idols of Ganesh are finally immersed in water accompanied by chants of 'Ganapati Bappa Morya'.
Onam: Onam is the most important festival of Kerala. It is the harvest festival of the state and falls in the month of Chingam (August-September). There are several legends regarding its origin. The most popular legend is that Mahabali, the legendary king who ruled over Kerala in an age of plenty and was pushed down to the infernal regions by Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana, returns to see his people once a year.
