Piggery Development

There are more than 128 lakh pigs in the country of which approximately 14.5 per cent are graded and exotic variety. There are about 158 pig breeding farms in the country run by the State Governments/Union Territories. Exotic breeds like Large White Yorkshire, Hampshire and Landrace are maintained at these farms. A Centrally-sponsored Scheme, namely, Assistance to States for Integrated Piggery Development, was implemented for strengthening the pig breeding farms in States during Ninth Plan. During the period, an amount of Rs 1521.87 lakh was released for strengthening the pig breeding farms in various States. The scheme was discontinued at the start of the Tenth Plan. A new scheme on piggery development viz. 'Integrated Piggery Development' has been initiated, on the basis of evaluation of the earlier scheme by NABARD, during 2006-07. Integrated piggery development scheme will be part of a new restructured centrally sponsored macro-management scheme viz. National Project for Improvement of Poultry and Small Animals.
