The non-completion of Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal in Punjab portion resulted in Haryana and Punjab taking the matter to the Hon’ble Supreme Court, which directed the Central Government to carry out its action plan for completion of the canal, under a judgment of 4 June 2004. Accordingly the Central Government started action. However, Punjab legislature on 12 July 2004 enacted Punjab termination of Agreement Act, 2004 terminating of its obligations under those agreements. This has bearing on completion of SYL canal and a Presidential Reference in the matter of the above Act was made and is before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
