  • In a tweet on Friday, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, the women will be inducted in graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent of total Corps of Military Police.

    She said, the decision to induct women in the military police will enhance their representation in the armed forces. Their role would range from probing rape and molestation cases to assisting the Army wherever required. 

    Currently, women are allowed in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army. 

    The role of the military police includes policing cantonments and army establishments, preventing a breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics during peace and war, handling prisoners of war and extending aid to civil police whenever required.

  • In a video shot by local media, Diario Plaza Juarez, showed hundreds of people gathered near the ruptured pipeline before the explosion.

    Emergency services were later seen arriving at the scene of explosion.

    The ruptured pipeline was near the Tula refinery of state oil firm Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), which in a statement blamed the incident on an illegal tap.

    The explosion was one of the worst in recent history in a country that has suffered hundreds of illegal ruptures to its network of oil and gas pipelines.

  • IMD Additional Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra said, a team of scientists of the deparment, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting are working on models that could forecast probability of thunderstorms well in advance. 

    Mohapatra also said, the IMD is contemplating sending s on thunderstorms through Twitter.

    Last year in May, over 200 people died in thunderstorm incidents.

    In Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh alone, violent winds had killed nearly 180 people last year.
     

  • Many parts of the country are experiencing severe cold while some areas of Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing snowfall.

    Srinagar and other parts of valley are experiencing very light to moderate snowfall since Friday evening.

    MetT department has predicted heavy snowfall and rain in most parts of Kashmir valley and elsewhere in the state. The residents in the areas have been advised not to venture out in vulnerable zones to avoid any untoward incident.
     
    The Mughal Road and Srinagar Sonamarg Gumri Road are continuously closed due to snow accumulation. The travellers have been advised to confirm status of highway from traffic control units before proceeding for journey.

    In Himachal Pradesh, fresh spell of snowfall in upper reaches resulted in a cold wave condition. According to weathermen, heavy rain and snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places in the state on Saturday due to a western disturbance. 

    Meanwhile, tourist destination,  Manali in Kullu district continued to reel under sub-zero temperatures with a low of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius. Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 7 degrees Celsius. 

    In Delhi, people experienced a chilly day with the minimum temperature settling at 4.5 degrees Celsius and maximum 21.5, two notches below the average in the season. Moderate fog also hit some parts of the national capital. 

    Cold wave conditions also prevailed at few places over Haryana and Punjab and at isolated places over east Madhya Pradesh. Night temperature were below normal in some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana and south interior Karnataka.

    Rain or thundershowers have occurred at few places in Andaman and Nicobar islands. Mainly dry weather prevailed in Lakshadweep.

  • Cabinet minister and UP government spokesperson Shrikant Sharma said that the nod was given at a meeting of the state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow on Friday.

    The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019, providing for 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category was passed by Parliament in its recently concluded winter session. 

    President Ram Nath Kovind has since given his assent to the bill.

    The setting up of Medical College will improve tertiary care facilities in both Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and adjoining areas. PM Modi also unveiled a plaque to inaugurate various development projects in Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. 

    Prime Minister  also launched the m-Arogya app and door to door waste collection, segregation and processing of Solid Waste in Dadra and Nagar Haveli digitally. 

    In Silvassa, Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Medical College in Sayli. 

    In Mumbai, he will inaugurate the new building for National Museum of Indian Cinema and address the gathering. 

    The Museum has been set up to showcase the rich cinematic history of India as well as to encapsulate the socio-cultural history of India as revealed through evolution of Cinema. It will take the visitors through an absorbing journey of more than a century of Indian Cinema in a story telling mode with the help of visuals and graphics, film clippings,  publicity materials and interactive exhibits.

    Apart from this, 11 international organizations are participating as partner organizations for the Summit. 

  • The satellite will be used for the purpose of utilising space resources for security, operational planning and border infrastructure development.

    The project is slated to strengthen island and border security and facilitate the development of infrastructure in border and island areas.

    The move is part of recommendations made by a task force on the use of space technology in improving border management which have been accepted by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

    To execute the project in a time bound manner, a short, medium and long-term plan has been proposed for implementation in five years in close coordination with the ISRO and the Defence Ministry.

    In short term, immediate needs of border guarding forces will be met by procurement of high resolution imagery and hiring of bandwidth for communications.

    In mid-term, one satellite is being launched by the ISRO for exclusive use of the MHA.

    Over the long term, the MHA will develop ground segment and network infrastructure to share satellite resources by user agencies, develop a central archival facility for storing various imagery resources and dissemination of the same to user agencies.

     

  • Last month the agency had carried out searches in Delhi, Amroha, Lucknow, Meerut, Hapur and other places in connection with its probe into the new Islamic State module of Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam.

    It also arrested 10 people including the group head Mufti Mohammad Suhail as they were allegedly planning terror attacks targeting some political personalities, security establishments and crowded places in Delhi and the national capital region.

    The NIA also picked up a madrasa teacher from a mosque in Ludhiana in connection with an ISIS inspired module.

    The NIA sleuths accompanied by Punjab police raided the Madhni Jama Masjid at Rahon road during wee hours and detained Mohammad Owais Pasha who was employed as a Madrasa teacher and maulvi at the mosque.

    According to head of the mosque, Owais had come to Ludhiana from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh for the job.

    The NIA agency men also took away the CCTV cameras installed at the masjid. 

  • He has been held guilty of murdering journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati.Ramchandra Chhatrapati ran a newspaper Poora Sach.

    The newspaper ran a series of reports that exposed how girls and women were sexually abused in the ashram of Gurmeet Ram Rahim in Sirsa, Haryana.Chhatrapati was shot at on October 24, 2002.

    He succumbed to his injuries later. A case was registered against Ram Rahim in 2003. CBI took over the case in 2006 and a chargesheet was filed 2007.

    The verdict was pronounced on Thursday by a CBI special court in Panchkula, Haryana.

    The CBI had demanded capital punishment for the accused but the court awarded them life imprisonment.

    Three other convicts Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh and Krishan Lal, have also been awarded life imprisonment.

    The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each.All the four were convicted under Sections 302 (murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

  • The development comes days after the CBI registered a case on January 2nd against 11 people, including public servants and others, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

  • The tenures of three more officers -- Joint Director Arun Kumar Sharma, Deputy Inspector General Manish Kumar Sinha and Superintendent of Police Jayant J Naiknavare -- have also been curtailed.

    The development comes days after Alok Verma was shunted out of the post of CBI director and appointed Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards.

    Verma had refused to take up the new post, saying he had already superannuated from the police service.

    Both Asthana and Sharma are from the Gujarat cadre and were on collision path on many matters too.

    Asthana had complained to the CVC about Sharma as well, besides the former Director Alok Verma, while Sharma went to Delhi HC against Asthana.

    The other officers whose tenure has been curtailed are Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manish Kumar Sinha and SP Jayant J. Naiknavare.

    PM Modi said,“It is our constant endeavour to simplify procedures for small entrepreneurs. We are moving towards the system when the banks can give credit to small entrepreneurs on the basis of GST and other returns. We are clearing loans up to Rs one crore in 59 minutes”.

  • The special court on January 11, 2019 had declared all four guilty of the murder of the journalist Ramchander Chatrapati and quantum of sentence had to be decided on Thursday. 

    While Gurmeet Singh and Kishan Lal have been charged under section 120B and 302, Kuldeep and Nirmal who had killed Chatarpati have been charged under Arms Act and sections 120B and 302 of IPC.

    Keeping the law and order situation in view, Gurmeet Singh appeared in the court via video conferencing, from Sunaria jail, Rohtak while three other accused appeared in the court through video conferencing from Ambala jail.

    The judgement was pronounced by the same judge Jagdeep Singh who had earlier sentenced Gurmeet Singh for 20 years in female disciple rape cases.

  • The agency arrested one man in Ludhiana in connection with the ISIS-inspired terror module case.

    The arrested man, identified as Mohammad Ovesh Pasha. 

    The searches were carried out by the NIA today at seven places in western Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in connection with the investigation of the recently busted ISIS-inspired terror module.

    On December 26 last year, the NIA had busted an ISIS-inspired terror module, targeting important personalities including politicians and vital installations, by raiding 17 locations in Delhi

  • The commission will look into public complaints, information and conduct prompt, impartial, comprehensive investigations against persons who had held or continue to hold political office and those who have been or continue to serve as public servants and officers of statutory bodies.

    President Sirisena had announced to appoint the commission at the height of political crisis last year during which he had removed Ranil Wickremsinghe as the prime minister.

    Sirisena had said that he will appoint the commission to probe wrongdoings against Wickremsinghe government.

    Accordingly, a retired Supreme Court Justice Upali Abeyratne has been appointed the chairman of this commission of inquiry.

    The commission has been instructed to submit an interim report within a three-month period and the final report, containing the conclusions and recommendations, within six months.

    Relations between the President and Prime minister have been far from cordial with differences emerging on several aspects of governance.

    The Modi govt's commitment to digital India was on display with Prime Minister Modi transacting digitally while making a purchase at one of the stall. He hailed GST for encouraging a honest business environment. Prime Minister also said that the GST council is sensitive to the needs of small business and has been taking decisions in their interest.

    Prime Minister described the GEM platform as a boon for small entrepenuers. He listed several other steps taken by his government for MSMEs.

  • Gandhi Peace Prize for 2018 will be conferred on Yohei Sasakawa who is Goodwill Ambassador of the World Health Organization for Leprosy Eradication. The award will be given to Sasakawa in recognition of his work towards eradication of the disease in India and across the world.

    Ekal Abhiyan Trust has been chosen for the award for year 2017 while Akshaya Patra Foundation and Sulabh International will share the award for 2016.

    Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari bagged the award for 2015. Vivekananda Kendra will be awarded for its contribution in rural development, education, development of natural resources.

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the trebling of the capacity of the Numligarh Oil Refinery in Assam.

    The refinery's capacity will be hiked from 3 million metric tonnes per year to 9 with a cost of 22,594 crore rupees. The capacity expansion will generate jobs apart from bridging petroleum products deficit in the North-East.

    The cabinet also cleared the next generation system for processing income tax return filings sanctioning 4,241.97 crore rupees for the project. E-filing and Centralised Processing Centre 2.0 will help bring down the ITR processing time to one day speeding up refunds.

    CABINET BOOST FOR EXIM BANK

    -- Capital infusion of 6,000 crore rupees in state-owned Exim Bank was also cleared through recapitalisation bonds to expand its business
    -- Equity infused will be in two tranches of 4,500 crore rupees this fiscal and 1,500 crore rupees in the next
    -- The bank's authorised capital has also been doubled from 10,000 to 20,000 crore rupees
    -- The infusion of capital into Exim Bank would enable it to augment capital adequacy and give better support to Indian exports.

    -- The cabinet also cleared expenditure of over 5,000 crore rupees for the completion of 13 under construction Central Universities
    -- The Universities were cleared to be set up at a cost of 3,120 crore rupees
    -- But delays and cost overruns have pushed their final price tag beyond 8,000 crore rupees

    The cabinet also gave ex-post facto clearance to the agreement on facilitation of visa arrangements between India and Maldives apart from a MoU between India & Australia on safety in mines, testing and research station.

  • Union Minister for Water Resources and River Development Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated the 9th International Micro Irrigation conference at Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

    740 delegates including 100 foreign delegates from 56 countries and as many 100 agricultural scientists are attending the conference.

    Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister said that micro irrigation system is very crucial for development of the agriculture sector in rural economy.
     

     

  • Fate of Kumaraswamy government in Karnataka's JDS-Congress government continues to hang in balance with reports of more Congress MLAs going incommunicado.

    According to media reports emerging from Bengaluru, around 11 legislators have gone missing and Congress leadership is unable to contact them. There are unconfirmed reports that these legislators could resign from Congress and shift loyalites. One of these MLAs, Umesh Jadhav from Chincholi, who was aspiring to be a minister, has been spotted with BJP leaders in Delhi.

    The MLAs are said to be disgruntled over not finding place in the coalition government.

    While, State BJP MLAs continue to remain lodged at a hotel in Gurugram.

    Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy and Congress have said that there is no threat to JDS-Congress government. Congress has called legislature party meeting in Bengaluru on January 18th.

  • Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday won a confidence vote and averted a general election, a day after her government suffered a parliamentary defeat over her Brexit divorce deal with the European Union. Her government won by 325 votes to 306 - a majority of 19.

    After the results of the confidence vote were announced to cheers from her Conservative MPs, British Prime Minister Theresa May said she believed parliament had a duty to find a solution that delivered on the 2016 Brexit referendum result.

    She said that she would "continue to work to deliver on the solemn promise to the people of this country to deliver on the result of the referendum and leave the European Union".

    May has appealed the MPs from across the political divide to come together to break the impasse over Brexit.

  • Addressing a public gathering in Odisha, Prime Minister Modi said Sahu, who was targetted by "cowardly" Naxals, was performing his duty of presenting to the world the democratic picture of the country through Doordarshan. He also said that sacrifices such as his have only strengthened India's resolve to end this cycle of violence.

    Sahu, along with three police personnel, was killed in an ambush in Dantewada district, a Maoist hotbed in the heavily forested central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Another police personnel who was critically injured in the attack succumbed to injuries.

    DD News had deployed a team to cover the elections in Bastar. The team, accompanied by the police forces, was videotaping a notice put up by Naxals to boycott the elections and stop development works.

  • He said 90 percent of the rural habitations are now connected by road. He was addressing a gathering at Kollam in Kerala after dedicating the Kollam Bypass to the Nation. Prime Minister said that the last man in the queue is his Government's concern. Prime Minister urged the Kerala Government to expedite implementation of various centrally-sponsored projects in the State.

     

    Earlier in the day, PM  Modi launched and laid foundation stone of several development projects, worth over 1,500 crore rupees, at Balangir in Odisha . PM Modi dedicated to the nation electrification of Jharsuguda-Vizianagaram and Sambalpur-Angul lines spanning 813 kilometres completed at a cost of around 1,000 crores.

    Prime Minister also inaugurated the doubling of Barpali-Dungaripali and Balangir-Deogaon railway lines. He also inaugurated the 15 km-long Balangir-Bichhupali railway line. 

     

    Later, addressing a public meeting, PM Modi said, his government has taken five steps for the overall development of the country. These, he said, are education for children, employment for youth, medicine for old people, irrigation for farmers and public hearing for common people.

  • Prime Minister Modi dedicated to the nation electrification of Jharsuguda-Vizianagaram and Sambalpur-Angul lines spanning 813 kilometres completed at a cost of around 1,000 crores. He also inaugurated the doubling of Barpali-Dungaripali and Balangir-Deogaon railway lines. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 15 km-long Balangir-Bichhupali railway line laid at a cost of 115 crores. It is part of the new 289 kilometre Balangir-Khurda road line which connects Howrah-Chennai main line on Khurda Road and Titlagarh-Sambalpur line at Balangir. A new train on Balangir-Bichhupali route which would benefit commuters of the region was also flagged off, besides connecting Bichhupali to Jharsuguda and Vizianagaram main line through Balangir.

    PM Modi also dedicated to the nation Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Jharsuguda. The Park promotes movement of goods for domestic as well as global trade. It will establish Jharsuguda as a prime logistics hub and boost ease of doing business in the state. A bridge between Theruvali and Singapur Road station was inaugurated on the occasion. The bridge re-establishes the linkage over Nagavali river, which was destroyed during floods in July 2017.

    Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated Passport Sewa Kendras at Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Phulbani, Bargarh and Balangir. Foundation stone was also laid for a permanent building of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sonepur. The Prime Minister also inaugurated renovation and restoration works at Nilamadhav and Siddheswar Temple at Gandhaharadi in Boudh, Paschim Somnath group of temples, also in Boudh, and Ranipur Jharial group of monuments in Balangir.

    Later, addressing a public meeting, PM Modi said, the projects that kickstarted, will not only spur the growth of Odisha but also of eastern India. He said, in a month, more than 20,000 crore rupees of development projects have been either inaugurated or initiated in Odisha. Prime Minister Modi said, the Opposition is not aware of the country's natural resources. They criticised Sardar Patel’s statue. But, after becoming world’s tallest, the statue generated jobs for the people residing around the statue. He said, unlike the previos governments, the BJP government is working towards renovation of many historic building of Odisha.

    Later in the day, the Prime Minister will visit Kollam in Kerala and inaugurate a 13-kilometre bypass connecting a stretch from Mevaram to Kavanad. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will attend the function. Prime Minister Modi will also address a public meeting at Asharamam ground in Kollam.

    PM Modi will offer prayers at the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram. He will also commission several developmental projects undertaken in the temple complex under Swadeshi Darshan scheme.

  • Gujarat has become the first state to provide 10 percent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category, starting today.

    It will be implemented in all ongoing recruitment processes including where only an Advertisement has been published and a first stage of examination is yet to be held.

    124th Constitutional Amendment passed in Parliament on the last day of the Winter session of Parliament allows for this quota.

    Prof. Philip Kotler is a world renowned Professor of Marketing at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management. Owing to his ill-health, he deputed Dr. Jagdish Sheth of EMORY University, Georgia, USA, to confer the award.

  • A SpaceX cargo craft departed after a successful mission to deliver scientific equipment and other supplies. The SpaceX-CRS-16 Dragon transported more than 2,500 kilograms (5,600 pounds) of cargo to the space station and orbited Earth for five weeks. Dragon is expected to splash down just west of Baja, California. International Space Station crew member said :"As we all know nothing in space flight is routine. Every day that we live and work in orbit, every time we launch satellites, cargo or humans to beyond our atmosphere we are working at the very limit of human capability. And with every feat we push that limit further. Each step, like this one today, is an example of humankind's insatiable propensity to explore. Congratulations to all the teams that have made the Space 16 mission possible. Godspeed, and bon voyage to Dragon."

     

     

     

  • The accident is the deadliest reported so far this year in China's coal industry, known for its poor safety record. State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of rescuers and ambulances gathered outside the coal mine.

    It occurred at Baiji Mining Co Ltd's Lijiagou mine in the city of Shenmu on Saturday, when 87 people were underground. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, which was the deadliest reported so far this year.

    Sixty-six miners were rescued but 21 were trapped underground, it reported. Nineteen of the miners were confirmed dead at first while a search continued for the two missing miners; however, they were later found dead. On Sunday, the official Xinhua News Agency said that Shanxi province, which borders Shaanxi, would also carry out inspections at high-risk coal mines.

  • The first bathing was taken by saints and seers of different Akharas. According to Kumbh Mela administration around one crore 25 lakh devotees area expected on this Royal bathing Makar Sankranti.

    Twenty-one Snan Ghats have been set up for bathing. Special arrangements have been made for women devotees and for the first time three women police units have been pressed into service. More than one lakh twenty thousand toilets have been erected for making Clean Kumbh. 

    Whole the area is reverberated with the sound of conch shells, bells, drums and chanting of Mantras, Bhajan and Kirtan. People are donating khichdi bhog and cloths on Makar Sankranti. Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place for the safe bathing. Besides, three Jal police stations, 9 NDRF water emergency teams have been pressed in service. The whole kumbh area is divided into 20 sectors and 9 zones for keen vigil by sector and zonal magistrates. Forty police stations, 58 police outposts including three women police station are erected where more than  20 thousand security personnel are deployed. 

  • In France, thousands of demonstrators turned out across the country for new "yellow vests" protests, with dozens of arrests and clashes in Paris and other cities.

    Police in the capital used water cannon and tear gas as scuffles broke out at the Arc de Triomphe, on the ninth consecutive weekend of protests. Some 84 thousand demonstrators took part in the nationwide protests initially triggered by the rising price of fuel.

    They have since widened to include anger at the cost of living, with a wide-ranging list of other demands.

  • He teamed up with Mehuli Ghosh to help West Bengal win the 10m air rifle mixed team event. Delhi's Devanshi Rana bagged gold in Under-21 girls  25m pistol event. 
      
    Maharashtra once again dominated the gymnastics arena at the Games to wrap up the Under-21 category with a whopping nine medals on the last day of gymnastics events. 

    With 18 medals comprising nine gold, six silver and three bronze in gymnastics,  Maharashtra were also crowned champions.

    In Hockey under -21 category,  Odisha beat Uttar Pradesh in the first semi-final 2-1 while Haryana proved better than Punjab with a 3-1 win. Odisha and Haryana will now play for gold on Tuesday.  

    In overall medals tally, Maharashtra completed its half century of gold medals. Delhi follows with 36 gold and Haryana 31 golds so far. 

  • Addressing a select gathering on the occasion, Mr Modi recalled Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s fight for the weaker sections.

    The Prime Minister also took to Twitter to pay tributes to the Sikh Guru. In an audio message, Modi said, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was a divine figure full of heroism, valor, courage, sacrifice and devotion. He said, whenever, an attempt was made to suppress the voice of the poor and the weak, Guru Gobind Singh Ji raised his voice and stood firmly with the poor.

    Paying homage, President Ram Nath Kovind said, Guru Gobind Singh Ji devoted his life to serving the people and upholding truth, justice and compassion. He said, the example and teachings of the Sikh Guru continue to inspire people.

    The birth anniversary of the Sikh Guru is being celebrated as Prakash utsav at Patna Sahib. The main function is organised at Takhat Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurdwara, Patna Sahib, the birth place of Guruji, where thousands of pilgrims across the globe are offering prayers. Special langars are also being organised and people of different sections are participating in it.

  • The accident took place at around 16:30 on Saturday at the Lijiagou coal mine of the Baiji Mining Co, Ltd, a privately-owned company founded in 2003, in the city of Shenmu. At that time, 87 people were working underground. Sixty-six of them were brought to safety after the accident.

    The city government confirmed 19 were dead, and rescuers were in search of another two trapped miners. The last two trapped miners were found and confirmed dead, according to local authorities.

    An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
