  • The news report tries to create unnecessary panic among mobile users by claiming that “they stare a prospect of disconnection if SIM cards procured on the basis of Aadhaar verification are not backed up by a fresh identification”.

  • The 15-year-old son of a farmer lost a one-sided final to Trenton Cowles of the USA 0-6 as India concluded with three gold, nine silver, and one bronze at the event that was launched in 2010. Seeded fifth after qualification, the Haryana-boy was inconsistent in the summit clash against the 15th seed Cowles, who only shot in 10s and 9s to wrap it up easily on Wednesday night. In the three-setter, both the archers shot four perfect 10s, but Akash's two wayward 6s in the first and the third set proved to be the decisive factor.

The summit clash was held under windy conditions following light rains. "I have trained in the wind, but here it was too much. I was waiting for an opportunity but he (Cowles) was stronger and I had no chance," Akash said. "I feel good but I lost the gold medal," the 11th standard school-boy said after bettering Atul Verma's feat of a bronze at the Nanjing edition of the Games in 2014. Akash took up archery six years ago after Manjeet Malik, a physical-trainer-turned-archery-coach, picked him during a trial. "One day my friends took me to a field where I saw kids aiming at a target with arrows. Mujhe laga woh shikaar kar rahe hain (I thought they were hunting something)," Akash said.

Akash, who used to play cricket with his friends, developed a fascination for the 'new-found sport'. "Mujhe laga mein kuchh kar sakta hoon (I thought I could do something)," he said. Akash's father Narender Malik, who is into wheat and cotton farming, never wanted his son to join him at the fields. "Initially my parents dissuaded me as they wanted me to study to land up a government job. But after I started winning medals they have started backing me fully. They must be very happy now," Akash, who will return to India with the contingent on Sunday, said.

"Now I've to put in more effort and hope to qualify for Tokyo Olympics," he said about his mission 2020. His coach Manjeet Malik said Akash's ability to remain calm had impressed him. "He was very calm and composed and I thought he could shoot arrows steadily. He now shoots with confidence. It was raining as well when the final started," the coach said. In 2014, Akash was part of the recurve boys team which won a gold medal at the mini national (under-14) archery championship in Vijayawada.

Akash went on to clinch a gold medal in the Youth Olympics qualifying event last year. He also won a gold medal at Asia Cup Stage-I, two bronze in Asia Cup Stage-II and a silver and a bronze in the South Asian championship, in the last one year. "It's indeed a proud moment for me and all the hard work is now paying off," Malik, who has about 80 students at his private academy, said. Akash is currently enrolled by the Olympic Gold Quest and trains under South Korean coach Kim Hagyong at the Army Sports Institute in Pune. Making a solid start to the final, Akash started off with a 10 but then he shot a 6 in his second arrow and concluded the first set with another perfect 10.

The American, on the other hand, remained consistent with scores of 10, 9, 9 to take the first set 28-26. Stepping up his game, Cowles shot two 10s and a 9 in the second set to win it 29-27. Under pressure in the third set, Akash shot another six that ruined his chances of a gold medal. He finished with two 10s but Cowles remained steady and sealed the issue 28-26 in the third set. Earlier, Akash finished in the last eight of the mixed international team event partnering Turkey's Selin Satir. The duo lost in the quarter-finals to Thailand's Aitthiwat Soithong and Argentina's Agustina Sofia Giannasio.

To prevent any untoward incident, strict security arrangements have been made throughout the state including the surrounding areas of the temple.

Meanwhile Sabarimala Karma samithi has called a peaceful strike in the state from 6 am to 6 pm on Thursday.

The committee says that the strike will be peaceful.

The NDA has also announced support for the strike. In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court on 28th Septemeber struck down a rule that disallowed girls and women in the 10-50 age group from entering the Sabarimala temple in Kerala.

The then Chief Justice Dipak Misra-headed Constitution bench in a 4-1 verdict said the temple rule violated their right to equality and right to worship.

The judges concurred that the denial of right to women significantly denudes them of their right to worship.

Judges rejected all the arguments of the temple board which had resisted allowing women of all ages.

This included an argument that it was an age-old practice and an essential practice of Hindu religion and that followers of Ayyappa were a separate denomination.

  • The ministry said it was working along with the state governments, the local authorities and the municipal corporations for augmenting and strengthening their efforts in vector control, surveillance and awareness activities. Chairing a high-level meeting to review the activities for prevention and control of the Zika virus and seasonal influenza, Union Health Minister J P Nadda also stressed the need to undertake exhaustive control measures, including fogging, while also strengthening surveillance to facilitate early identification of cases.

Zika is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya and breeds in open, stagnant water. Nadda was also briefed about the activities undertaken by the ministry to control the Zika virus in Rajasthan. "He was informed that 80 cases have been reported from the state while 330 teams have already been deployed in the affected wards of Shastri Nagar (Jaipur). A population of about 4,34,515 has been brought under surveillance. "Around 86,903 houses have been surveyed. 2,04,875 breeding sites were checked for larvae breeding and 74,483 were found to have larvae breeding," an official statement issued after the meeting said.

It pointed out that health workers undertook on-spot source reduction and containers were treated with temiphose during the survey. The health workers have also carried out focal spray and fogging in the affected areas, which were recommended by the team supervisors. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf said awareness drives have been initiated in schools to sensitise students about the disease.

Nadda has specifically instructed that early detection, reporting and proper categorisation of patients is critical for seasonal influenza management," the official statement said. "The minister has instructed the NCDC to monitor the cases on a daily basis. He has suggested that the states shall ensure that proper awareness is created regarding the prevention and management of seasonal influenza. All states shall also ensure that sufficient supplies of drugs and testing kits are maintained," it added.

All cases that require hospitalisation shall be monitored intensively both at the district and state level so as to ensure that fatalities are avoided, the minister has stressed, while adding that availability of sufficient functional ventilators for critical case management is important and the states shall be advised accordingly. "The NCDC and EMR shall coordinate with the states to provide training for ventilator management, if need be," the statement said. During the meeting, Nadda assured all the states of all support from the Centre, while emphasising the need for continuous monitoring to control the Zika virus in Rajasthan. He said the health ministry was in regular contact with the state officials.

The statement said Nadda spoke to the Rajasthan chief minister Tuesday, while the Union health secretary was monitoring the situation on a daily basis, in coordination with the state health secretary. Nadda also spoke to the Maharashtra chief minister and the health ministers of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, asking them to remain vigilant, and assured them of all the assistance from the Centre to check the spread of the H1N1 virus. "Nadda stressed the need for undertaking exhaustive measures, including intensive fogging, next month in order to ensure vector control. He also stressed on strengthening surveillance to facilitate early identification of cases.

"The Union Health Minister urged the people to not panic and cooperate with the health officials in controlling the breeding of the vectors. He further said that there was no shortage of medicines and testing kits and that required support will be provided to the states," the statement said. Nadda directed the officials to mount aggressive communication campaigns in the states, while noting that awareness was key in controlling vector-borne diseases. "No stone should be left unturned to reach out to the people," he said.

Noting that community participation was a crucial area in prevention, the Union health minister urged all the stakeholders to launch awareness campaigns regarding the preventive steps to be taken at the community level. "He said the Union Health Ministry was working along with the state governments, the local authorities and the municipal corporations for augmenting and strengthening their efforts in vector control, surveillance and awareness activities," the statement said. In India, the first outbreak of Zika was reported in Ahmedabad in January 2017 and the second in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district in July that year. Both these outbreaks were successfully contained through intensive surveillance and vector management.

  • Burns, 56, who was born in Belfast, is the 17th woman to bag the award in its 49-year history and the first woman since 2013. It was her third novel. 'Milkman', a coming of age story of a young woman's affair with a married man set in the political troubles of Northern Ireland, was named the winner at a lavish awards ceremony in London on Tuesday night. "None of us has ever read anything like this before. Anna Burns' utterly distinctive voice challenges conventional thinking and form in surprising and immersive prose," said Kwame Anthony Appiah, the chair of the 2018 judging panel.

"It is a story of brutality, sexual encroachment and resistance threaded with mordant humour. Set in a society divided against itself, 'Milkman' explores the insidious forms oppression can take in everyday life," he said. The recipient of the Man Booker Prize gets 52,500 pounds (USD 69,223 or Rs 50.85 lakh). Burns, who lives in East Sussex in England, saw off competition from two British writers, two American writers and one Canadian writer.

Set in an unnamed city, 'Milkman' focuses on a "middle sister" as she navigates her way through rumour, social pressures and politics in a tight-knit community. Burns shows the dangerous and complex impact on a woman coming of age in a city at war. Unusually, in the book, the characters have designations rather than names. Burns explains: "The book didn't work with names. It lost power and atmosphere and turned into a lesser or perhaps just a different book.

"In the early days I tried out names a few times, but the book wouldn't stand for it. The narrative would become heavy and lifeless and refuse to move on until I took them out again. Sometimes the book threw them out itself". Her novel beat competition from 'Everything Under' by Daisy Johnson, who, at 27, was the youngest nominee in the Man Booker prize history. The other nominees were 'The Long Take' by Robin Robertson, 'Washington Black' by Esi Edugyan, 'The Mars Room' by Rachel Kushner, and 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers.

'Milkman' is published by Faber & Faber, making it the fourth consecutive year the prize has been won by an independent publisher. Burns' win was announced by Kwame Anthony Appiah at a dinner at London's Guildhall. She was presented with a trophy by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and a 50,000 pounds cheque by Luke Ellis, Chief Executive of Man Group. The winning author also receives a designer bound edition of her book and a further 2,500 pounds for being short-listed.

"We are honoured to support the Man Booker Prize for the sixteenth year, as it continues in its fiftieth year to champion literary excellence and the power of the novel on a global scale," Ellis said. Appiah, a British-born Ghanaian-American novelist, was joined on the 2018 judging panel by crime writer Val McDermid; cultural critic Leo Robson; feminist writer and critic Jacqueline Rose; and artist and graphic novelist Leanne Shapton. The judges considered 171 submissions for this year's prize.

NEC also reviewed the present screening system at Sri Lanka customs and emphasized the need to screen all containers instead of the present system of random screening at Sri Lanka customs. The moves came as Sri Lankan rupee has come under pressure which has invited criticism from opposition groups.
