The Ministry of AYUSH was originally set up as a separate Department of Indian Systems of Medicine & Homoeopathy (ISM&H) in 1995 with the mandate, inter alia to formulate policies for development of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), their propagation and promotion within and outside the country.

The scheme has been vogue during the 9th, 10th & 11th plan and is continuing since then. Based on the experience of IEC activities in 9th, 10th & 11th plan and with a view to make the scheme more effective, the scheme was suitably in the year 2011. This has enabled the department to take up initiative like taking forward propagation and promotion of AYUSH system of medicine to all the states/UTs both in urban and rural areas with special thrust on North East & Hilly State.

There is a need for spreading the knowledge & benefits of AYUSH system of medicine to the large section of people across the globe. This is possible only if the drugs and practices are validated through an exhaustive research process based on standard parameter.

The scheme of Continuing Medical Education (CME) was implemented in 11th Plan and about 22,000 AYUSH personnel were given need-based training. The target in 12th Plan is to cover maximum number of AYUSH teachers, doctors, paramedical and others personnel.

The Objectives of scheme are to fill in the critical gaps in the sector especially related to standardization, quality assurance and control, productivity, marketing, infrastructure and capacity building through a cluster based approach preferably for classical ASU and Homoeopathic drugs. To encourage the level of organization in the sector thereby creating social capital for sustainability of collective initiatives.

AYUSH systems of medicine are popular and progressively a large section of population uses these systems for health care, there is lack of awareness among the general public about remedies available in these systems. Keeping this in view, a scheme of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) was implemented in IX and X Plan.

The Department of AYUSH has introduced a Scheme for Extra-Mural Research in addition to the intra-mural research undertaken by the Research Councils for Ayurveda and Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy and Yoga and Naturopathy set up by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare three decades ago.

Local Health Traditions (LHT) constitutes the community health dimension of AYUSH. The carriers of these health traditions are ordinary households and local community based healers. The LHTs have traditionally played an important role in supporting the primary healthcare needs of rural households.
