Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), set up as Tezpur Lunatic Asylum in 1876, has served the mental health needs for many decades. However, children and adolescents with developmental, behavioral, and mental health problems were seen along with adult patients until recently.

The full-fledged Department of Anaesthesiology was started in the year 2003 following the purchase of computerized Electro-Convulsive Therapy machine and Boyle's apparatus. Modified ECT was introduced in the year 2004. The department is fully involved with the patient care services in addition to undertaking theory classes and demonstration sessions to the post graduate and diploma students of the Institute. Besides, it also caters to the medical students and professionals coming from other academic institutions.

The Department of Radiology was started in the year 1999 as a specialized, full-fledged department to meet the clinical needs in diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapies of the institute. Currently, the Department has a modern CT Scan machine, X- Ray machine and a Color Doppler Ultrasonic machine for the purpose.

The full-fledged Department of Biochemistry in the institute was started in the year 1999 with a goal to achieve overall quality in teaching and patient care services. The Department of Biochemistry is a basic science Department, actively engaged in diagnostic support, teaching, training and research.

The Department of Pathology and Microbiology was started in the year 1998.

The Department of Clinical Psychology was set up in the year 2002 as an independent department, with Dr. Maitreyee Dutta's joining as a Clinical Psychologist. From 2002 to 2010, the thrust area of the department was to provide clinical services to the patients and families visiting the out-patient and in-patient units.

The Department of Psychiatric Social Work (DPSW) came into being in 1998. The department has the onus of dual responsibility of initiating psychiatric social work services and teaching programs in the field. The primary focus of the department has been in initiating psychosocial services at the hospital, conducting academic training in psychiatric social work (PSW) and researching relevant areas in Mental Health.

The department of Psychiatric Nursing was started in the year 1998 for enhancing professional training and thereby augment manpower resources in the field of Psychiatric Nursing. The department is presently running three courses, i.e. Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing, M. Sc. Nursing (Psychiatric Nursing) and Ph. D. in Psychiatric Nursing.

The Institute has been rendering mental health care since its inception. A separate Department of Psychiatry came intoexistence in 1998 for starting of academic courses in psychiatry to meet the shortage of manpower in the region. Residenc Scheme of Government of India was started in this Institute from 2001.
