Dr. Manmohan Singh assumed office as the 14th Prime Minister of India on May 22, 2009. He took oath of the office for first term on May 22, 2004.
Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932 in Punjab province of undivided India.
Immediately prior to election as the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Singh was the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha from March 21, 1998 till May 22, 2004.
Education:
Dr. Manmohan Singh did Bachelors and Masters in Economics from Punjab University in 1952 and 1954 respectively. He studied Economic Tripos (First Class honours) from University of Cambridge in 1957 and received D.Phil from Nuffield College, University of Oxford in 1962. He authored ‘India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth’ which was published by Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1964. He has received honorary degrees of D.Litt. from more than 15 institutions.
