The Consumer Affairs Department was set up in September 1999 for protecting the interest of consumers as envisaged by the Consumer Protection Act. 1986. State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, 21 Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, the Directorate of Legal Metrology and Directorate of Consumer Affairs & Fair Business Practices are functioning under this Department.

The computerization of Registration Offices in West Bengal is designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the conventional registration system and to improve citizen services by making them quicker, friendlier and transparent by re-engineering Department's process as well as to build capacity of the members of the staff and to streamline the monitoring capability of the project team and infrastructure through the use of e-governance tools.

The main role of this Directorate is to ensure safety to human life and property through sound manufacturing, erection and commissioning practice, safe operation and proper maintenance of boilers, economisers, steam and feed water pipelines by applications of the provisions of the relevant Acts and Rules. It is a fully technical directorate which mainly deals with design, manufacturing, erection and registration of Boilers.

Indian National Bibliography (INB) has been conceived as an authoritative bibliographical record of current Indian publications in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu languages, received in the National Library, Kolkata under the Delivery of Books and Newspapers, (Public Libraries) Act, 1954 (Act No. 27 of 1954 as amended by Act No. 99 of 1956).
